Sensing Place: Lambton between the lines

Lambton between the lines, is a collaborative art-research project by Andreas Rutkauskas (Montreal), Lee Rodney (Windsor), Lisa Daniels (Curator, Gallery Lambton) and the SARCASM Collective (Sarnia) .  This site chronicles the field research and community contributions that will inform new readings of the historical, industrial and political landscapes in Lambton County. The project is funded by Gallery Lambton, The Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.

Contributions are welcome. See contact page below for details.

Pedestrian Bridge near Corunna: One of the biggest tensions in Lambton County is between its industrial history, particularly the legacy of Chemical Valley, and the restoration projects that are being established as the Valley downsizes and moves south to Corpus Christi, Texas. This pedestrian bridge, sponsored by Shell Canada, which has a plant nearby, bears the modest imprint of its corporate logos, a nod to an era of corporate responsibility and community engagement. It crosses over the mouth of Talfourd Creek where it flows into the St. Clair River.

We’re told this might be the entry to Planet Xenon, one of Sarnia’s most elusive sites. This site is forever confused in my mind with the story of “the blob”.  See CBC archives for a super 1980s style image.

Smoke Stop #1.

These trailers on the edges of Aamjwinaang on the river front are interesting.  I know they sell cheap cigarettes, but they also seem to have some kind of connection to the border. The one across the street was open, though this one seemed closed for the season.  This one was notable as it was set up as a drive through.

Sarnia’s Shipyards: This was one of my favorite locations in Sarnia where you get a sense of the interface between the land and the waterway, and one of the few industrial sites that wasn’t on security lock down. The mural of the old battle ship in the foreground is a gem.

Surveillance Zones along the waterfront.  On our initial forays into Chemical Valley we presumed it would be possible to walk through the industrial complexes that were visible from the road (and across the river).  We quickly learned that one does not wander through the Valley.

Pipelines in Spring.

Above ground pipelines at the decommissioned Dow Chemical site are visible as a squiggly line on the horizon. Crab apple and cherry trees skirt the perimeter of the site.

Talfourd Creek became nationally known as a site contaminated by PCBs, nickle, cadmium, and lead from nearby industry: it also runs through the Aamjiwnaang first nation and has been the subject of contention over long term health effects. There are signs along the pedestrian river walk that suggest the Creek is being taken seriously as a restoration project.
